If you arrive during the day, your hotel will be located in the lively Miraflores neighborhood, which offers excellent shopping and dining options. In the afternoon, you will enjoy a city tour that is included in your itinerary. However, if you arrive late at night, your hotel will be located close to the airport, allowing you to get a good night’s sleep before your flight the next day.

DAY 2

Arrive on Cusco & City Tour (Overnight Sky Lodge Dome in Cusco)

After arriving at Cusco Airport, you will be warmly received and transported to your hotel. To help acclimatize to the altitude, you will be served a refreshing cup of coca tea. You will have the morning to rest and relax, and we recommend enjoying a light lunch at your hotel or one of the nearby eateries. In the afternoon, we will embark on a city tour that includes visits to various archaeological centers and museums, such as the Main Square, the Cathedral, and the Koricancha (Temple of the Sun). Additionally, we will tour other archaeological sites, including the Sacsayhuaman Fortress, Q’enko, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay. The tour is expected to conclude around 6:30 pm in the main square, allowing you to dine at one of the exquisite restaurants in the area before retiring for the night. (Meals not included)

DAY 3

Sacred Valley of the Inkas Pisaq-Ollantaytambo & Chincheros (Overnight Sky Lodge Dome in Cusco)

After breakfast, you will be picked up at 8:15 am for a full-day excursion to the Urubamba Valley. The tour includes a visit to the vibrant Indian market in Pisac, where you can witness a colorful display of tradition and culture.

During your free time, you can also interact with local craftsmen and bargain for their handmade souvenirs. Located at the entrance of the Sacred Valley, Pisac is 31 km (19 miles) from Cusco and sits at an altitude of 2,970 meters (9,700 feet). Following Pisac is Ollantaytambo, the oldest town continuously occupied in the American continent.

The narrow streets of Ollantaytambo, along with their unchanged Incan channels, evoke the town’s ancestral heritage. After lunch at a typical restaurant, we will continue to explore Ollantaytambo before visiting Chincheros. The tour will end with a return to Cusco

DAY 4

Mollepata – Challacancha – Humantay Lake – Soraypampa (Overnight Sky Lodge Dome in Soraypampa, Humantay Lake)

We will pick you up from your hotel between 4:30 a.m. to 5:00 am to start our Salkantay trek. After a 2-hour drive to Mollepata, we will stop for breakfast before continuing our journey for another hour to Challacancha, where we will begin the trek.

As you prepare for the hike, our cook and horseman will pack up the camping gear and cooking supplies. The first 3 hours of the hike will be uphill, and we will reach Soraypampa, where we will have lunch with stunning views of snow-capped mountains, including Humantay (4120m/13500ft) and Salkantay (6271m/20575ft).

After lunch, we will trek to Humantay Lake and return to Soraypampa, our camping spot for the night (3800 m/11750ft), located close to the second highest Salkantay snow-capped mountain in Cusco.

On the first day, we will cover a total distance of approximately 15 km and hike for about 7-8 hours. The maximum altitude point will be 3,800 m, and our campsite altitude will also be 3,800 m.

DAY 5

Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Chaullay – Loreta La playa coffee Camp (Overnight Sky Lodge Dome in Loreta Playa Sahuayaco)

After an early breakfast on the second day of our Salkantay Trek, we will start walking at around 6:00 am as this will be the longest day of our journey.

The first four hours will be an uphill climb to reach the highest point of the Salkantay Trek (4650m/15200ft), which is situated halfway between two enormous mountains – Salkantay on the right and Tucarhuay on the left.

The view of the two snow-capped mountains from this pass is incredible, and there is a possibility of snow. After taking a break and enjoying the views, we will continue our walk through a dramatic cloud forest towards Huayracpunku, where we will have lunch.

We will then hike again in the direction of the jungle until we reach Chaullay, where we will take local transportation for an hour to reach our La Playa Loreta Coffe Campsite.

We will stay at this campsite because the next day we will climb up to a mountain to see one of the most beautiful Inca trail sites – Llactapata – from where you can also see Machu Picchu City.

2ND DAY: Total distance: approximately 19 km Estimated walking time: 8 – 9 hours Maximum altitude point: approximately 4,650 m Campsite altitude: approximately 2,750 m

DAY 6

Loreta La playa – Llactapata – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes (Overnight at Hotel in Aguas Calientes)

Our day will start with an early breakfast at 6:00 am before leaving our campsite at La Playa Loreta. We will walk on the original Inca Trail towards the Llactapata site, where you will have a stunning view of Machupicchu from afar, making it one of the most beautiful places to witness the ancient city.

We will then continue on foot, passing through various crop plantations, such as coca and banana, until we arrive at the hydroelectric station for lunch.

After lunch, we will walk for approximately two and a half hours until we reach the town of Aguas Calientes, where we will spend the night at a hotel. In Aguas Calientes, you can take advantage of the thermal springs in the town, which is a real treat after completing the Salkantay Trek.

Please note: For those who do not wish to hike along this trail, there is an option to take a bus to Santa Teresa and participate in adventure sports such as zip lining and canopy before transferring to the hydroelectric station for lunch and meeting the group. However, this option comes at an extra cost of US$40 per person.

3RD DAY: Total distance: 15 km (approx.) Estimated walking time: 7 – 8 hours Maximum altitude point: 1,600 m (approx.) Hotel (Aguas Calientes) altitude: 1,900 m (approx.)

DAY 7

Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco!!! (Overnight Sky Lodge Dome in Cusco)

The Salkantay trek’s most important day is here! We rise early at 4:00 am and have breakfast by 4:30 am. Then we begin our ascent to Machu Picchu, which takes about 1.5 hours on foot.

Alternatively, there is an option to take the first bus at 5:30 am, which only takes 25 minutes and allows you to witness the breathtaking city as the sun rises.

Your guide will give you a walking tour of the mysterious city for about 2 hours, after which you can explore it on your own. If you still have the energy, you can also climb Huayna Picchu (2720m/8890ft), which takes 45 minutes to reach the summit.

Then, our trek starts by following a beautiful stream, and we’ll immediately encounter herds of alpacas and llamas. Throughout the hike, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Ausangate Mountain, pass through villages, and interact with the locals. We’ll take a break for a deluxe box lunch along the trail.

The next part of the hike includes traditional elements such as potato fields, unique fauna, and the possibility of seeing chinchillas and vicunas, which are the only non-domesticated members of the llama family in Peru. Red mountains are also a highlight of this section of the trek.

After approximately 5 hours of hiking, we will reach our destination, the Rainbow Mountains (5,020 m / 16,466 ft). The beauty of the site will leave you awestruck, and you’ll have time to explore and take pictures. We will spend around 30 minutes at the top.

It will be time to descend and we will take the same route back, and it will take about 4 to 5 hours to hike down. Our private van will be waiting for us when we return.

Finally, we will drive back to Cusco, and drop you off at your hotel. You can expect to arrive between 5 and 6 PM. The trek is challenging, covering a distance of 15 km / 9 ¼ miles, with the lowest elevation being 4,326 m / 14,189 ft and the highest being 5,020 m / 16,466 ft. Travel Guide

The Salkantay Trek 2 Days  is a high mountain trekking experience that has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the most technical and challenging routes in the Peruvian Andes region. Altitude and Acclimatization on Salkantay:

The first technical challenge that hikers encounter on the Salkantay Trek 2 Days is the altitude. The journey begins in Cusco, a city that is located more than 3,300 meters above sea level. Sudden exposure to high altitudes can lead to altitude sickness, making acclimatization essential. Participants must spend several days in Cusco before beginning the trek to allow their bodies to adapt to the decreased oxygen pressure.

The Trek and Variable Terrains:

The Salkantay Trek 2 Days involves extreme variability in terrain, ranging from dirt roads and rocky trails to narrow paths along steep slopes. The route crosses forested areas and flame traps at altitudes above 4,600 meters. Changing weather conditions and the occasional presence of snow and ice increase the complexity of the route. Hikers should be prepared to face challenging and varied terrain along the entire route.

The Best alternative for the Inca Trail

Proper navigation is a critical component of the Salkantay Trek due to the complexity of the route and limited signage. Hikers must rely on topographic maps and GPS to stay on the correct route. Trail signs can be sparse, requiring a high level of orientation and route knowledge. The help of experienced local guides is often essential to ensure safe navigation.

Climate and Technical Preparation:

Climate variability is a key factor in the Salkantay Trek 2 Days. Hikers may experience rain, snow, and wind conditions at different times of the year. Technical preparation includes carrying appropriate equipment, such as waterproof clothing, trekking boots, hiking poles, and sleeping bags suitable for sub-zero temperatures. The ability to evaluate and adapt to changing weather conditions is essential for a successful voyage.

The Final Experience on Machu Picchu Tour:

The Salkantay Trek 2 Days is a technical feat that rewards adventurers with stunning landscapes and an immersion in the natural beauty of the Peruvian Andes. Those seeking the technical challenge of this route must be prepared to face a variety of obstacles and conditions, including altitude, varied terrain, precise orientation, and unexpected weather changes.

As you advance, you will witness the majesty of the snow-capped Salkantay and the authenticity of the local communities. The Salkantay Walk is a technical achievement that provides exceptional natural and cultural rewards.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend leaving any unnecessary luggage in your hotel, where most offer a safety deposit service free of charge. If your hotel does not have a place to store your luggage, we can provide an alternative storage option. Please let us know.

The sleep mat weighs 1 kg and the sleeping bag weighs 2 kg.

Our guides carry a first aid kit for basic medical problems, and receive Red Cross First Aid and other emergency training every year. In the rare instances when a traveler is unable to complete the hike, they are escorted back to Cusco and typically feel well enough to rejoin the group in Machu Picchu (See machu Picchu Availability https://www.machupicchu.gob.pe/) via train a few days later. In the case of a serious medical emergency, travelers would need to be evacuated to Cusco, where modern medical facilities are available. Our guides and porters have pre-established evacuation strategies in place should this need arise.

We supply high-quality equipment, including 4-season aluminum-pole tents, dining tents, tables, chairs, toilet tents, cooking equipment, water purifiers, air Thermarest mattresses, and other camping gear. We regularly evaluate and replace older equipment to ensure the highest quality for our clients.

We recommend carrying only the items you will need each day while hiking, such as water, snacks, camera, and film. Porters will carry all other supplies, including camping equipment, clothes, and sleeping bags. To prevent overloading porters, we ask that travelers limit their personal belongings to 12 lbs for the hike. If you have requested a pottering service, an extra porter can carry your personal items based on the pottering service you have selected: Full Porter (12kg), Half Porter (6kg), or Porter to carry Sleeping bag and Pad (4 kg).

Our Quechuas Expeditions Tours guides are experienced, fluent in English and Spanish, and from the surrounding Cusco/Sacred Valley area. They have 5-10 years of experience leading Inca trail hikes and are knowledgeable in the history, spirituality, culture, and ecology of the area. We receive excellent feedback from clients on our guides, and many are highly recommended by Lonely Planet and TripAdvisor.

A cook accompanies every group on the Inca trail, providing breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. The menu is a mix of local specialties and international favorites, and vegetarian meals are available upon request. Special dietary requests can be accommodated with sufficient notice.

We recommend bringing refillable water bottles to limit plastic waste. Water is boiled, treated with iodine, and then filtered with one of our portable filters (Katadyn and PUR commonly used). It is available in the morning to fill your bottles and at every meal.

Trek permits are non-refundable and non-transferable, so we are unable to replace cancelled passengers with new passengers.

We usually purchase permits within a few days of receiving your deposit. If you require an urgent confirmation, you can send your deposit by Western Union, which is the fastest and safest way in Cusco, Peru. We can receive the money and confirm your trip within minutes.
