Salkantay and Humantay Treks

Humantay Lake, also known as Laguna Humantay, is a stunning glacial lake located in the Peruvian Andes, near the city of Cusco. It is situated at an altitude of approximately 4,200 meters (13,800 feet) above sea level, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and adventure seekers.

The lake’s pristine turquoise waters are fed by the melting snow and ice from the nearby Humantay Glacier, which is part of the larger Salkantay mountain range. To reach Humantay Lake, visitors must embark on a moderate to challenging trek, which typically takes around 3 to 4 hours to complete round trip. Along the way, hikers can spot native bird species, such as the Andean goose and the Andean flicker.

The trailhead for the Humantay Lake trek is located in Soraypampa, a small village in the Mollepata district. From there, the path ascends through rocky terrain and narrow pathways, gradually gaining altitude. The final stretch requires some effort as it involves a steep climb, but the rewarding view of the lake at the end makes it all worthwhile.

Upon reaching the lake, visitors are greeted by the awe-inspiring sight of the shimmering turquoise waters surrounded by towering peaks, including the snow-capped Humantay Mountain. Many travelers choose to spend some time at the lake, soaking in its beauty and serenity. Some even take the opportunity to dip their feet in the cold, refreshing waters, although swimming is not recommended due to the lake’s glacial origin.
