Frequently Asked Questions

Salkantay is considered a challenging but doable hike for the average traveler or tourist. However, physical fitness is necessary to undertake this trek, and spending at least two days in Cusco before starting the trek is recommended for acclimatization. It’s important to note that even extremely fit individuals are not immune to altitude sickness.

The trek covers approximately 60.5 kilometers (37.5 miles) and lasts for four days and three nights. One day of the trek is spent at Machu Picchu. Compared to the Inca Trail, Salkantay is considered slightly more difficult, but other trails like Choquequirao are considered to be slightly harder than Salkantay.

The Salkantay Pass, located at an altitude of 4,630 meters (15,228 ft) above sea level, poses the most formidable challenge on the trail. Hikers should be prepared for icy winds and chilly temperatures, and may experience symptoms of altitude sickness. However, these symptoms typically dissipate once you begin to descend. If necessary, oxygen will be provided. The Salkantay Pass is the most demanding section of the trek due to several factors, including uphill climbing, frigid winds, low temperatures, and the low-oxygen environment at high altitude.

The Salkantay Trek may not be available from mid-March to the end of February due to weather conditions. We cannot guarantee the trek’s availability during this time. We will only allow the trek to start if the weather is good and we deem it safe for our porters and clients.

You can choose your own hotel in Cusco, and our guide will visit your hotel the day before the trek and pick you up from there.

The Salkantay Trek is a 4-night and 5-day trek, with the 5th night spent at Machu Picchu. On average, you will hike approximately 12 km per day, but some days may be more challenging than others. The total trek is approximately 60 km.

To secure your spot for the hike, we recommend making a reservation in advance and paying a 30% deposit as the first payment. The remaining 70% can be paid in Cusco, either two days before the trek or at our office.

You can choose from various payment methods, including online payment, VISA card, Western Union, Money Gram, or a Peruvian banking account. The deposit is essential for us to make important purchases, such as entrance fees to Machu Picchu, bus and train tickets, and to plan the logistics of the trek. Additionally, the deposit assures us of your participation and helps us determine the number of guides and amount of food required for the trek. Once received, the deposit is non-refundable as it is immediately used for these purposes.

To book the Salkantay Trek, please fill out the attached booking form with accurate and up-to-date information. This includes providing your full name, passport or ID number, nationality, gender, and birth date. Any incorrect information, such as a missing passport number or misspelled name, may delay the booking process.

The Salkantay Trek 5 Days has various trails and campsite options, but the trail we follow is approximately 60.5 km long. On average, expect to hike for 8-9 hours each day.
