Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Huaracmachay – Chaullay (Sky Lodge Dome)

Get ready for another breathtaking day on the Salkantay Trekking adventure. As you wake up in your cozy SkyDome, you’ll be greeted by the stunning sunrise over the majestic Salkantay Peak.

Start your day with a hot cup of coffee or tea and a hearty Andean breakfast, packed with protein to give you the energy you need for the day’s hike.

Today’s trek will take you to the highest point of the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu: the Salkantay Pass, located at an altitude of 4630 meters (15190 feet). Get ready for a challenging but rewarding hike as you take in the stunning views of the Andean mountains and valleys.

Salkantay Pass:

Our next adventure on the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu promises to be nothing short of epic. As the sun rises, the golden rays will beam through the walls of your SkyDome, illuminating the mighty Salkantay Peak. You’ll start the day with a traditional Andean breakfast, packed with protein to energize you for the upcoming trek.

We’ll be taking the iconic “Trail of the Seven Snakes”, named after the seven switchbacks that lead to the summit. This section of the trek can be challenging due to the altitude, but we’ll take it slow so you can catch your breath and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Andean peaks.

Salkantay Peak is the second-highest peak in the Cusco region and is considered a sacred entity in Andean mythology. The locals call it “Apus”, meaning “Father” in Quechua, and perform sacred rituals, including K’intu, which involves seeking blessings using three Coca Leaves. Our guide will share these rituals with you.

Once we reach the summit, we’ll have plenty of time to admire the views of Humantay, Taucarhuay, and Pumasillo peaks. After you’ve had your fill of the views, we’ll hike down the hill for another 7 kilometers (4.35 miles) to our lunch camp in Huacarmachay (3850 meters/12631 feet).

Our lunch camp is situated in a valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks, where our crew will serve a freshly cooked Andean meal.

After lunch, we’ll leave the Andes behind and enter the Peruvian Amazon Jungle. We’ll cover the 8-kilometer (4.97-mile) stretch at a normal pace in three hours.

As we descend the hill, you’ll witness a drastic change in the topography, and it will get slightly warmer. Our tour guide will explain the different plant, animal, and bird species, most of which are native to the region.

Once we reach our campsite in Chaullay (2900 meters/9514 feet), our crew will assist you to your respective Sky Dome, where you’ll spend the night. We’ll meet for dinner to cap off another memorable day on the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu.

Day 2 Trek Summary:

  • Total distance: 19 km (approx.)
  • Estimated walking time: 8 – 9 hours
  • Maximum altitude point: 4,650 m (approx.)
  • Campsite altitude: 2,750 m (approx.)

Chaullay – LLuscamayo – Loreta La Playa Sahuayaco (Sky Lodge Dome)

At 6:00 AM, our crew will gently knock on your Skydome door to wake you up. Once you’re up, we will provide you with a cup of coffee followed by breakfast.

The third day of the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is comparatively easier. Our trek will take us through Santa Teresa Valley, which is a home to different farms. We will be crossing the Lluscamayo river and hiking towards La Playa for about six hours.

The trail is decorated with several waterfalls, and the region is famous for its avocado, banana, and coffee farms. Trekking enthusiasts have often spotted the Peruvian national bird, the Andean Cock of the Rock, in this area.

We will be stopping for lunch at our campsite in La Playa where our crew will serve lunch. After that, we will visit some of the farms in the area, where we will give you a guided tour. Alternatively, you can choose to unwind in the natural hot springs of Ccocalmayo in the evening.

We will serve dinner later in the evening, and then you can retire to your respective Sky Domes for a good night’s sleep.

Day 3 Trek Summary:

  • Total distance: 16 km (approx.)

Loreta – Lucmabamba – Llactapata – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes (Hotel)

Breakfast will be served at 0800 AM. Following that, we will start our hike through a section of the Original Inca Trail, where you will have a magnificent view of Machu Picchu in the distance. This viewpoint is considered one of the most beautiful spots to see Machu Picchu from.

We will then trek up the hill to reach one of the most stunning Inca complexes, Llactapata, situated at an elevation of 2700m / 8858 ft. From here, you will have a closer view of Machu Picchu complex.

Llactapata is the first Inca archaeological site on the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu that we will visit. Our knowledgeable local expert will take you on a guided tour of the complex, immersing you in the history and Andean culture.

Afterward, we will hike downhill for about an hour and a half while enjoying the sight of Machu Picchu peak in the distance. We will pause for lunch in Hidro Electrica, situated at an altitude of 1800 meters / 5096 ft. The place is named after an artificial waterfall that generates electricity.

After lunch, you will have two options:

You will have two options to get to Aguas Calientes from Hidro Electrica. The first is to embark on a three-hour hike along the railway tracks, retracing the footsteps of Hiram Bingham III who rediscovered Machu Picchu.

This scenic route takes you through the tropical jungle, with stunning views at every turn. Alternatively, you can take a 45-minute train ride to Aguas Calientes at an additional cost of 35 USD.

If you choose to hike, you will also have the opportunity to see Intihuatana, a sundial rock that the Incas used to read the winter solstice. This rock worked together with the stone in the Machu Picchu citadel, which you will be visiting the following day.

Once you arrive in Aguas Calientes, we will check you into an ensuite hotel room for the night. In the evening, we will gather for dinner. Aguas Calientes is known for its hot springs, so you can take a refreshing dip in the thermal waters to relax and unwind.

Day 4 Trek Summary:

  • Total distance: 12 km

Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes – Ollantaytambo – Cusco

After having breakfast at the hotel, our next destination is the Machu Picchu citadel. To reach this historic site, we’ll embark on a 25-minute bus journey up the hill early in the morning. It’s essential to have your original passport with you, as it will be cross-checked against your Machu Picchu ticket at the entrance gate.

As you step into the citadel, the morning sun will gradually illuminate Machu Picchu’s walls, creating a stunning golden spectacle as the clouds gently unveil this ancient wonder. Our knowledgeable guide will provide you with a brief overview of the Inca empire before we commence our exploration of various significant areas within the citadel. This will include visits to the ceremonial site, the farming sector, and the remnants of the royal quarters.

After the guided tour, you’ll have some free time to relish the breathtaking views of Machu Picchu. For those who have arranged to hike to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu peak, our guide will direct you to the appropriate trailhead. Alternatively, you can choose to hike to the Sungate, which offers a panoramic view of Machu Picchu citadel and does not require an additional entrance fee.

Once we’ve thoroughly absorbed the splendor of this site, we’ll exit the citadel and take a bus back down to Aguas Calientes. In Aguas Calientes, you’ll have some leisure time for lunch or to explore the charming town.

Later in the evening, we’ll board a train heading to Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival at the train station, our representative will be there to meet you. From there, you’ll be transported back to your hotel in Cusco, where we will catch our overnight bus at 8:30 pm bound for Puerto Maldonado.

Upon your arrival in Puerto Maldonado, whether by flight or bus, our dedicated team will be eagerly awaiting to provide you with a warm welcome and assist you in getting settled.

Our first task is to ensure your smooth registration at our office, where we will also securely store any excess luggage you might have.

Following this, we’ll make our way to the Capitania port, embarking on an exciting motorboat journey that will take us along the Madre de Dios River for approximately 40 minutes, ultimately leading to our destination, the Amazon Garden Lodge. Upon your arrival, we’ll greet you with a refreshing welcome drink to kick off your adventure.

The day’s excitement commences with an invigorating climb up a tower and stairway, which leads to a treetop platform. Here, you’ll encounter an impressive zip-line that stretches nearly 200 meters, offering not only awe-inspiring panoramic vistas but also a thrilling rush of adrenaline as you gracefully glide through the air, secured by top-quality harnesses.

Upon reaching the far end, a suspended log walkway, extending 75 meters and suspended 27 meters above the ground, will guide you to the second zip-line, measuring 160 meters and returning you to the tower. Following this exhilarating experience, we’ll return to the welcoming embrace of the Amazon Garden Lodge.

After a satisfying lunch, we’ll embark on a serene kayaking excursion on the river. You’ll be equipped with premium life jackets, and for added safety, a motorboat will accompany us. This leisurely activity, classified as level one, will take us to Monkey Island, where you’ll have the chance to observe a variety of playful monkeys, including capuchin, Camarines, and squirrel monkeys.

These agile creatures will entertain us with their acrobatics as they swing through the treetops and gracefully descend the trunks of towering trees to accept food from our outstretched hands.

Our day’s adventures will draw to a close at the Amazon Garden Lodge. However, for those eager for more, there’s the option to participate in nocturnal activities such as caiman spotting.

Sandoval Lake

Following a delectable breakfast, we will ensure each traveler is well-equipped with lunch and snacks before we embark on a boat journey to reach the control point of Tambopata National Reserve Zone. A 1.5-hour trek through the vibrant rainforest will lead us to the renowned Sandoval Lake.

We will be immersed in the grandeur of ancient trees, tangled vines, and a rich tapestry of colorful flowers and wildlife, including giant otters, birds, butterflies, turtles, and fish. We’ll spend several hours peacefully paddling in a canoe across the serene waters of this magnificent lake, widely regarded as one of the most picturesque in the region.

Subsequently, we’ll make our way back to the Amazon Garden Lodge for a nourishing dinner and a well-deserved rest.

9.-day Salkantay Treks

Native Family and Rustic Fishing.

We will embark on a journey downstream on the magnificent Madre de Dios River for an hour to reach the Native Community of Ese´Ejas, the largest Ese Eja community with around 200 families.

During our visit, we will have the opportunity to explore the culture, language, customs, clothing, and dances of two families involved in the “Rescuing Cultural Values” project situated on Gamitana Island.

In our modern society, we tend to overlook ancestral cultures and traditions. The Ese´Eja culture offers a glimpse into the customs and way of life of indigenous people.

It allows us to connect directly with a people of ancient warriors and hunters and to learn from their ancestral ways. We will have lunch at 1 pm.

In the afternoon, we will have the chance to engage in rustic fishing in the Madre de Dios River. With some luck, we might catch species such as pictus catfish, smallmouth, armored catfish, and red-eye piranha. We will return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and rest.

Parrots and Parakeet’s Clay Lick (Cachuela)– Puerto Maldonado

Parrots and parakeets gather at salt licks and clay walls to consume nutrient-rich clay that helps them digest and neutralize toxins and acids from the flowers, fruits, and seeds they eat.

We will observe this natural phenomenon in the Madre de Dios region of the Amazon rainforest early in the morning.

After this amazing experience, we will return to the lodge for breakfast and leave for Puerto Maldonado at 11:30 am. You will have free time to explore the city before boarding the overnight bus back to Cusco, arriving at approximately 7:30 am.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend leaving any luggage that is not necessary for the trek at your hotel. Most hotels in Cusco offer a safety deposit service where you can store your belongings, and many do not charge for this service if you are returning to the same hotel after your trek.

However, if your hotel does not offer this service, we also have a place where you can store your luggage with us. Please let us know if you need this option.

Our guides are equipped with a basic first aid kit to address minor medical issues such as traveler’s diarrhea, cuts, and scrapes. Every year, they undergo training in Red Cross First Aid and emergency response.

Over the years, our guides have successfully led more than 300 trekkers along the Inca trail, and we have encountered very few instances where someone was unable to complete the hike. In rare cases where a trekker cannot continue, they are escorted back to Cusco for medical attention and are usually able to rejoin the group in Machu Picchu via train a few days later.

However, in the event of a serious medical emergency, travelers may need to be evacuated to modern medical facilities in Cusco. Our guides and porters have established protocols in place for such situations.

We provide our clients with all necessary camping equipment including sleeping tents (3-people-capacity tents with 4 season Aluminum poles accommodating 2 people each), dining tents, tables, chairs, toilet tents, cooking equipment, water purifiers, air Thermarest mattresses, and other camping gear.

To ensure the best quality, we regularly evaluate and replace older equipment with newer and better-performing gear. Our outfitter in Peru sources the highest quality camping equipment available.

We suggest that you carry only the essentials that you will need during the hike such as water, snacks, camera, and film. The porters will carry all your other supplies, including camping gear, clothes, and sleeping bags.

It’s best to leave any unnecessary luggage at your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley to prevent the porters from being overloaded. We also ask that you limit your personal belongings to 12 lbs for the hike, and if you have an extra porter, they can carry your personal belongings.

Depending on the pottering service you choose, you can have a full porter (12kg), half porter (6kg), or a porter to carry your sleeping bag and pad (4kg).

Our Quechuas Expeditions Tours guides are some of the most experienced and best guides in the area. They are native to the Cusco/Sacred Valley region and speak fluent English, Spanish, and Quechua, the native language. They have 5-10 years of experience leading Inca trail hikes and receive annual training in emergency response and first aid.

Our guides are knowledgeable in the history, spirituality, culture, and ecology of the area, and they receive excellent reviews from our clients. They come highly recommended by Lonely Planet and Trip Advisor, and you can find more information about them on our Testimonials page.
