Short Inca Trail Review

The Inca Trail is renowned as one of the top 5 most beautiful hikes globally, with the Classic Inca Trail being the most popular route to Machu Picchu. However, for those not prepared for a 4-day hike and 3 nights camping, the Short Inca Trail provides a more manageable 2-day alternative, ideal for those seeking a taste of the Inca Trail without an extended hiking commitment.

While I am an avid hiker experienced in multi-day treks, the prospect of camping in the jungle with mosquitoes did not appeal to me. Opting for the shorter version of the Inca Trail allowed me to experience the hike in just one day, with the added bonus of a guided tour inside Machu Picchu the following day. On the first day, you reach the best viewpoint of Machu Picchu, and the next day, exclusive access to the lower levels is granted to Inca Trail hikers, providing a unique perspective of one of the new seven wonders of the world through the Sun Gate.

Pro Tips:

– When booking, aim for small group sizes (max. 7-10 people) for a more personalized experience.

Short Inca Trail Permits and Costs:

Securing a permit for the Inca Trail is crucial, with only 500 issued daily. Permits cannot be purchased individually; authorized tour agencies offer them as part of a comprehensive package, including a guide, entrance to Machu Picchu, accommodation, and transportation. Prices start at around 500-600 USD for a 2-day Inca Trail tour, varying with services and the season.

Pro Tip: To reduce costs, consider starting your tour from Ollantaytambo instead of Cusco, using public transportation, and choose shoulder months (May, September) to avoid high-season prices.

Best Time to Hike Short Inca Trail:

The optimal time for the 2-Day Inca Trail is during Peru’s dry season from May to September. September, in particular, strikes a balance between the dry and wet seasons, offering warmer weather and fewer crowds at Machu Picchu.

What to Pack for 2-Day Short Inca Trail:

Given the unpredictable weather in the cloud forest along the Inca Trail, packing appropriately is crucial. Essential items include a passport, daypack, light poncho, sunglasses, sunscreen, hiking socks, waterproof boots, insect repellent, trekking pants, breathable long-sleeved top, cold-weather jacket (depending on weather), head cover, cameras, chargers, and at least 1.5 liters of water.

Pro Tip: Hydration bags are recommended for convenience.
